The county and city of Fairfax earned their names in 1649 when King Charles II granted five million acres to Thomas Fairfax, Sixth Lord of Fairfax of Cameron. At the time, the land grant also included what are now known as Arlington, Loudon, Falls Church, and Alexandria.
